UPDATE: KENNETH COLE SAYS BALD IS
BEAUTIFUL!!
The Kenneth Cole Fall 2008 campaign has arrived!! "We All Walk in Different
Shoes" has launched into cyberspace. You can go to the Kenneth Cole website
at
www.kennethcole.com
to see the new round of visionaries (lil' moi included!) that are marchin'
to the beat of our own drums (or beatboxes, as the case may be). On the KC home
page, click on my lil' smilin' face on the lefthand side and on the page
that opens, you'll see me smack in the middle of
the batch. Click my photo again to see the print ad and view my video
interview (and peruse my bio, f'y'like, too!).
Look out for a special campaign insert (featuring two of my images) in
the New York Times in the Sept 11 paper, as well as full-page placement in
the Metro News.
I will also appear in the Kenneth Cole Awearness blog as a
contributor in the "Well-Being" section! My first piece will be up
at the beginning of September in observance of September being Ovarian Cancer
Awareness Month. Yahoooo! You can check out the blogsite at www.awearnessblog.com/wellbeing
to read my piece and many interesting, relevant pieces about politics, world
events, and social consciousness from a range of perspectives. Knowledge is
power, folks!
It can't be said enough: I'm so honored to be part of this movement and have
my voice and message so wonderfully presented. Thank you to Mr. KC and all the
passionate, creative, kick-ass people who created and implemented this
campaign. You all rock!
KENNETH COLE SAYS BALD IS
BEAUTIFUL!!
I recently booked and shot a worldwide print campaign
for KENNETH COLE!!!! It's part of his "non-uniform
thinking" campaign
—
tagline "we all walk in
different shoes"
—
and will be hittin' the
streets in the fall (possibly mid-July) . . . we're
talkin' posters, buses, magazine ads, storefront
window displays, feature on Kenneth Cole website
(w/bio & video interview), and maybe even
a billboard in NYC! It's truly a dream come true!
I'm so honored to be among the creative, powerful, distinct, passionate
people in this campaign. Bald Is Beautiful was just an idea I had during my
ovarian cancer journey
— and little by little my
visions are becoming reality (this one took 7 years!). My initial spark/idea
was around the power of merging fashion and activism, and now I'm part of a
campaign and vision from someone who is a consistent force for social change
and awareness on a global level!
It's an affirmation
to keep on dreaming and living your dreams! I am so thankful for all of the
support, positivity, encouragement, and love I have received over the years
as I have been building my visions.
"Our truest joy is when we are in dreams awake." (so sayeth Thoreau)
"Be the change you want to see in the world." (so sayeth
Ghandi)
"Always smile from the inside out!" (so
sayeth moi! heehee.)
You can see the campaign that is running now at
www.kennethcole.com/thinkers . Check back in a few months to see the new
additions to this family of visionary spirits!

BALD IS BEAUTIFUL GOES "BI"(-coastal,
that is)!
Life in LA-la-land (aka Hollywoodland) is
pretty good so far. I'm enjoying my improv classes at Upright Citizen's
Brigade Theatre (and seeing tons of improv/comedy there; their shows are
part of my self-imposed "laugh therapy" program!), as well as scene study
and cold reading classes in North Hollywood. I booked a commercial for A.E.P.
Electric earlier in the year and have done some independent short film
projects, too. I've had some really strong audition experiences and am
starting to meet some amazing folks here, hopefully connecting into the
creative millieu where the visionaries exist to cultivate some collabs of
monumental proportions (i.e. bring Bald Is Beautiful to da masses)! LA-la
vita e bella 'n bald!
BALD IS BEAUTIFUL ASKS, "WHAT'S UP,
ANNAPOLIS?" (or, rather, they ask ME . . .)
Bald Is Beautiful was featured in an
article in the July 2007 issue of What's Up, Annapolis? magazine
exploring the scientific, physical, emotional, and spiritual experiences
that come with hair loss (natural or due to a health challenge).
You can read the online version
(significantly edited)
HERE. Enjoy!
THE REVOLUTION IS BEING TELEVISED!!
BALD IS BEAUTIFUL HITS NATIONAL NETWORK
& CABLE AIRWAVES (and mags 'n rags, too)!
At the end of October, my first national
commercial will begin airing (details tba)! Bristol-Myers Squibb put
together a set of spots of cancer survivors who used their products for
treatment. Directed by Academy Award-nominated Bennett Miller
(Capote), the scripts were derived from our own words in the initial
interview/audition, and they are all powerful, inspiring, moving pieces.
The beauty of the commercials is we were
never asked to "promote" their products; obliterating the myth that you have
to make someone feel bad about themselves in order to promote a product, and
going for the much more impactful encouragement and supportive message,
these spots stand alone as messages of hope, positivity, and inspiration for
everyone! There are a couple of "regular folk" (myself and Maria), and then they did celebrity
spots with Lance Armstrong and the divine Lynn Redgrave. They aired on
national network and cable channels, as well as a beautiful print campaign
in Time, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The
Week, and more! I'm honored to have
been a part of these beautiful, soulful creations.
You can see the spot anytime at
www.bms.com if you don't catch it on the
tube!

It is estimated that one in eight American women will develop breast cancer at
some point in her life. In 2004, 272,000 women will have died from cancer.
Behind this staggering statistic is the face of a woman who needs your help –
a mother, a wife, a sister, a friend. The need is great and that is why I
would like to ask for your help.

BALD
IS BEAUTIFUL MAKES HISTORY (HISTORY CHANNEL, THAT IS)! In
October 2005 –
five years to the month after I was originally diagnosed with cancer –
the History Channel aired a
special companion piece about the making of their November documentary series
on The
Crusades, called History in the Making (re-aired again in
November). As part of this special
piece, they interviewed people who they considered to be
"modern-day crusaders" –
people who were passionate and devoted to making a positive impact on the
world at whatever personal sacrifice – and I was one of them!
In the middle
of this 30-minute "Making Of" special (first aired on my Dad's birthday at
that!), there was a beautifully-shot
segment dedicated to us sharing our journeys with viewers and (hopefully)
inspiring others to "be the change they want to see in the world"!
I am so honored to be among the handful of extraordinary people that were
highlighted and are continuing to make history! Yeah!!

EXTRA! NEW YORK POST CALLIN' (again) . . . A follow-up article appeared on Feb 25th in the New York Post. I was asked by
the writer to get in touch with other women who had been through the cancer
journey as patients or as caregivers and see if they wanted to be included in
their next piece:
If
you could ask Melissa one question about her cancer journey, what would it be?
The article is lovely and the women's questions and Melissa's answers shed
much Light, as well as a positive and empowering spin, on the typically
negative knockin'-on-heaven's-door portrayal of what cancer looks and feels
like. We are strong, we are proud, we are beautiful, we are sexy, and we are
kickin' cancer's ass!

P.S.
This time, they got my website right! Yeah! heehee!
THE BALD IS BEAUTIFUL REVOLUTION WILL BE TELEVISED!
And it was indeed when
Melissa Etheridge tore the roof of the
Shrine Auditorium at this year’s Grammy Awards show for the Janis Joplin Tribute – donning a bold,
bad-ass, beautiful, bald head! She sang the @#%&* outta “Piece of My
Heart” and that trademark gutteral Joplin scream got a whole lotta extra GUT
from Melissa. She reached down into the very core of her soul and let out a
gritty growl that was full of the rage, passion, pain, power, and
beauty of LIFE, which she holds so dear and lives to the fullest with passion,
integrity, honesty, and courage. Her radiance was unrivaled by anyone else in
that room.
The
New York Post did a follow-up article (cover story of the
Feb 15th paper!) on page 9, and I was interviewed and quoted as
well thanks to my friends at Gilda’s Club who referred the writer to me for
a reaction to that segment of the show.
The article is so wonderful (thank you, Mr. Heller) – it
focuses on the compassion and power of Melissa’s choice to perform without
covering her bald head, instead of the “wow, she’s bald” shock value. It
shined a light on the idea that women are indeed being made to “hide” or
live “in shame” even while facing a life-threatening illness, and that
there is another way to be and feel about that, both as a woman and as the
society that sees that woman. Yeah.
In case you missed the article, you can still
read it online by clicking HERE.
(They misspelled
this here website in the article, but hopefully
folks will find their way here somehow – there may be a listing of the
correct site in the Feb 16th paper.) It’s on, baby!!

BALD IS BEAUTIFUL IS INDEED
EN VOGUE . . .
It’s not
my bald ‘mug in Vogue Magazine (yet), but THIS WEBSITE is prominently listed
at the end of a very moving and powerful article by Susan J. Halpern about her
experience/journey with cancer, chemo, hair loss, etc. (title:
" . . . Susan J. Halpern finds not only style, but strength in being
bald" – just to give you an idea).
I was very excited to read about her message of self-love, true
self-acceptance, and ultimately reclaiming ownership of her own beauty (inner
and outer) -- of, by, and for herself . . . and then SHOCKED and amazed to see
my own website mentioned at the end of the piece! WOW!!
The article begins on page
140, then to page 142, ending on page 152, at the end of which is a resource
section for empowerment, support, and such, and thar she is:
baldisbeautiful.org, including a lil’ blurb about me and what BisB is all
about! Yeah! Now we just gotta get the visuals representin’ and we’re off!
Yahooooooo!
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!
BALD IS BEAUTIFUL MAKES MEDIA SPLASH ON NEWSSTANDS ALL OVER THE WORLD!!
Marie Claire Italia (September issue) - an amazing 6-page story about BOLD, a very special project of which I'm a part; they used my photos as the 2-page spread at the top of the story, and elsewhere throughout (starting on page 260)!! I have no idea what the article says (non palare italiano), but it's all about my friend Caggy and her wonderful BOLD project! Click HERE to learn more about the BOLD project and HERE to see the magazine! Wow!
Marie Claire U.S. (October issue--Brittany Murphy on the cover) - a terrific piece called "Women's Bodies Through the Ages", interviewing women ranging in age from 22 to a woman in her 70s about body image and such. The article starts on page 160 (my bit is on page 170). Take a good look and read, ladies (and gents too)! If these photos and the inspirational women in this article say anything, it's that life is BEAUTIFUL in every moment of time throughout time! Click HERE to see the magazine!
And, as mentioned below: BUST magazine, Fall issue (on stands now thru November or so!), page 42!!
BALDIE'S "BUST"-in' OUT!

BALDIE-ON-A-BILLBOARD IN TIMES SQUARE!!
As some of you may know, one of my pie-in-the-sky dreams for my Bald Is Beautiful project is for this bald gal to be in an ad on a Billboard in Times Square (with a company like CK or Gap in the context of "all-american-beauty", the image of which would say so much without having to say anything). Well, either the sky is falling, or dreams do come true, 'cause I'm up there baby! Before you get too excited . . .
It's not my head or even my face, but it's still a huuuge billboard on Broadway between 51st and 52nd Street, and them's my feets (the ones in the jeans and super-oo-la-la-la pointy-pumps)!! Click HERE to see the sign!
It's at least a (bad, corny pun coming up . . . ): STEP in the right direction. Or, you might say (another really bad, corny pun comin' atcha): I've got my FOOT in the doorway of my dreams comin' true.
Seriously though . . . it's super exciting. Feet or head or whatever, it inspires me to keep on keepin' on, knowing that dreams DO come true and don't ever give up. 'Nuff said!
I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. Demille! heehee
POSTCARD TO A PASSING FRIEND . . . HOMER AVILA 1955-2004
Dearest Homer,
I just heard from Morley that you have passed over to the "other side". I will miss seeing your smiling face, your glowing, radiant spirit, your joyful Love and Light. I know you won't get this message in the physical world, but maybe since this stuff is out there in "cyber space", it will get to you on the grid . . .
I Love you forever and always. You are in my mind, heart, spirit, and soul for all eternity as a source of Love, Light, Joy, Presents/Presence, Strength, Power, Courage, Commitment, Honor, Dignity, Grace, and LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!
I know that you are out there dancing in the sky, and the heavens never saw a light so bright as you. The flicker of the stars, the easy whisper of the cool wind, the joyfulness of the sun-kissed leaves on trees, and the luminous glow of the moonlight will forever be how I hold you and your infinite Love in my heart as your Light shines in, within, and around me and the world.
I LOVE YOU. Ciao 4 now. Until we meet again . . .
Peace & love.

FEBRUARY 2004
Hi folks! February 2004 turned out to be a fantastic month for me and Bald Is Beautiful. Although many of these things were recorded, created, done many months before, their appearance in the public eye all converged beautifully during the same time period, making for a flurry of Bald Is Beautiful exposure!
SEX & THE CITY
A cancer benefit scene, during which Kim Catrall's character, Samantha, is a guest speaker and, after enduring hot flashes and dripping sweat "all over her couture", decides to remove her wig in front of everyone. A number of cancer patients/survivor attendees follow suit in solidarity, approval, and pride. Not only was I one of the bald gals featured in that part, but I was also asked by special request of the casting director to bring in the other bald women for this special scene, because they specifically wanted real cancer patients and/or survivors to make the scene more powerful and meaningful for everyone - cast, crew, and audiences alike. The whole day was extremely powerful, emotional, beautiful, and I am honored to have been a part of it on so many levels. It was a cry-hug-fest all day! Airing on Feb 15th, it was the second-to-last episode of the show's final season.
On a sidenote: in gathering the women for the scene, I made a special point of connecting with members of the wonderful support organization/community, Gilda's Club, in the hopes that our presence en masse, so-to-speak, would give me a platform to request some visibility/awareness for this wonderful organization of which I was a member, and now a volunteer and advocate, and a huge fan! To my amazement and joy, they surpassed my hopes and expectations for a website mention by placing an entire paragraph (which I had written) about Gilda's Club on the official HBO/Sex & The City website on that episode's page (episode #93, at the end of the episode synopsis)! Now millions of people who will continue to go to that site will be able to read about Gilda's Club and have a phone number and web address to get more information about this incredible organization. Click HERE to check it out the S&TC mention!
Click HERE to see Kim Catrall with the Beautiful Baldies on Sex & the City!
SEAL MUSIC VIDEO ("Love's Divine" from the album Seal IV)
My principal role was specifically designed around my Bald Is Beautiful project (how that came about is a long story - big shout out to Stephanie for making that happen!). This video was released in Europe and Japan in Fall 2003, but a new U.S.-ready edit was created and began airing on VH-1 and other music video outlets all over the U.S. in February this year! I hear it's in heavy rotation at the H&M stores too (hee-hee)! Yahoo! You can also go to his website and check it out at www.seal.com.
ORGANIC STYLE MAGAZINE
Half-page article w/photo in March '04 issue (on stands mid-Feb); "Beauty and Being" feature about women, inner beauty, positivity, self-acceptance and empowerment. The article begins on page 76 with an amazing quote from Marcel Proust which I will have in other locations on this site because I love it so much; I'm on page 79. Check it out! It's a wonderful group of stunning and inspirational women. Click HERE to view my tearsheet.
COPING WITH CANCER MAGAZINE - JAN/FEB '04 COVER STORY
My twin sis, Elisa, and I graced the cover of the Jan/Feb '04 issue donning our matching "Sisters of Style" tee-shirts - so neat! I'm finally a "cover girl" - look out Cosmo and Vogue . . . I'm a-comin'! I also had a full-page article published in their Sept/Oct '03 issue. Hey - I'm officially a published writer! How d'you like them apples?
OLYMPUS® 2004 FALL FASHION WEEK
I did several very cool off-site runway shows before, during, and after this season's Fashion Week, including shows with designers Larry Underwood, Eriko Tamura, Courtney Washington, Patsy Boutique, and a few others!
CELEBRATION OF BLACK FASHION DESIGNERS @ THE APOLLO THEATER Feb 27th, 2004
(produced by Black Fashion Designers Association, Inc.)
This was a major highlight of my life to be on that legendary stage that has been graced by the likes of Marvin Gaye, Rev. Al Green, Aretha, Chaka, Maya Angelou, Smokey, Celia, and the list just goes on and on and on - and now you can add my name, baby! Woah! I wore clothing from funky to couture from designers Tyrell Mason, Anthony Eastwick, Abou Dia, Her Game Apparel, Bill Witherspoon, and Cantore Designs. Yummy, what fun!
